Legendary restaurant in theater district

"The Ivy" in London is a legendary restaurant that has been firmly rooted in the culinary and social landscape of the city since its founding in 1917. Located in the heart of the Covent Garden theater district, it is a staple of the West End and has built a reputation over the decades as a meeting place for celebrities, theatergoers, and gourmets. Originally opened as a small, casual café by Abel Giandolini, "The Ivy" has evolved into an icon of British gastronomy known for its glamorous atmosphere and top-notch service. Under the leadership of entrepreneur Richard Caring, who took over the restaurant in 2005, it underwent a comprehensive renovation by the renowned Martin Brudnizki Design Studio in 2015, further solidifying its status as a timeless jewel.

Culinary highlights in London

The atmosphere at "The Ivy" is distinctive, exuding a blend of elegance and warmth. The interior impresses with a shimmering central bar, the signature harlequin stained-glass windows, oak paneling, and an impressive collection of contemporary art. These elements lend the space a touch of nostalgia reminiscent of the roaring twenties, combined with modern comfort. The restaurant spans two levels, with the upper area featuring a private dining room ideal for special occasions or exclusive gatherings. Especially in the evenings, when the venue buzzes with theater patrons, there is a vibrant atmosphere that never feels overwhelming.

Experience excellent British cuisine

Culinary-wise, "The Ivy" offers a modern European menu with a strong British influence, continuously refined under Executive Chef Gary Lee. The menu combines timeless classics with contemporary influences, including Asian-inspired dishes and an expanded selection of salads and vegetables. A standout is the "Shepherd’s Pie," a hearty dish made from tender lamb mince, vegetables, and creamy mashed potatoes, regarded as the epitome of British comfort food and regularly praised. Equally popular is the "Scottish Smoked Haddock & Salmon Fishcake," a delicate fish cake that impresses with its rich flavors and crispy crust. For seafood lovers, the "Sea and Shells" section features refined options such as fresh oysters or grilled lobster, emphasizing quality and freshness.

Enjoy modern European dishes

The drinks menu is equally impressive and diverse. The wine list includes a wide range of European wines that pair perfectly with the dishes, while the cocktail selection features creative and classic concoctions. Particularly, the afternoon tea, served with a selection of fine teas, scones, and delicate sandwiches, has become a popular ritual—a tribute to British tradition that is refined with a touch of luxury at "The Ivy." For those who stop by without a reservation, the central bar offers the chance to enjoy the same dishes in a relaxed setting.

Top-notch service at restaurant

The service at "The Ivy" is a hallmark of the establishment and is often described as attentive, professional, and friendly. Under the direction of manager Fernando Peire, the team ensures that every guest feels welcome, even during peak times—such as before or after theater performances—when things can get a bit hectic. The noise level occasionally rises, contributing to the lively atmosphere. The restaurant has also adapted to modern needs, offering wheelchair access and options for various dietary requirements, increasing its accessibility.

The history of "The Ivy" is rich with anecdotes. The name is said to derive from a remark made by actress Alice Delysia, who assured Giandolini in 1917 that guests would cling to it "like ivy"—a nod to a popular song of the time. This connection to the theater world continues to shape the venue to this day, with personalities such as Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, and Noël Coward having been regular patrons. Although the celebrity presence may not be as high as during its heyday, "The Ivy" remains a place that radiates exclusivity and warmth.

Had a fantastic meal here, the food was amazing and certainly worth the money, try the Shepherds pie which is to die for. The staff were efficient and did all they could to speed our meal up before the concert. A truly perfect meal, Thanks to the manager Karim.

The chicken satay was brown chicken meat which wasn’t good, they should change that to chicken breast as it was very chewy , the burger wasn’t anything special, I actually think McDonalds does them better…. A lot of things to improve on for sure! Service was good, and the lady and men receptionist were fabulous and friendly, they looked after our bags and took a great care of us. Thank you

From the moment you step inside The Ivy, you are greeted with an atmosphere of classic elegance and charm. The restaurant’s sophisticated interior, paired with impeccable service, makes for an unforgettable dining experience. The Culinary Highlights Starter: The smoked salmon was a delight—fresh, buttery slices adorned with cucumber, microgreens, and crème fraîche, complemented by dark rye bread. A light yet flavorful beginning. Main Course: A beautifully cooked steak, topped with a rich béarnaise sauce, served alongside crispy golden fries. A perfect balance of indulgence and refinement. Dessert: The crème brûlée was a masterpiece—silky smooth custard beneath a perfectly caramelized, crisp sugar crust. A divine way to end the meal. With an atmosphere that blends history, sophistication, and culinary excellence, The Ivy truly lives up to its reputation. Every bite was a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality, making this visit an absolute delight. Would I return? Absolutely!

I had booked for a Sunday lunch, it was a special occasion, meeting our grandson who was on a work experience in London. When I booked I specifically informed the young lady it was for Sunday Lunch, she offered us a table for 17:00, when we arrived we were shown to our table, we had drinks and ordered 3 Sunday lunches only to be told that they had stopped service for that at 16:00, why the hell we weren't told that in the first place, God knows!! Disappointed or what.

Very disappointed with our visit to west street Ivy after we had good experiences at Tower Bridge , Canary wharf and Covent Garden sites. Arrived for our booking at 6.15pm at 6.10 pm told a bit early and table not ready. Shown to bar.We was still waiting after 20 minutes with no drink or anybody acknowledging us, so walked out and went next door to Louie were we had a fantastic meal and great service.
